Georgetown University Names Joshua Wegrzyn Swimming and Diving Assistant Coach

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 6. GEORGETOWN University swimming and diving head coach Steven Cartwright announced that Joshua Wegrzyn has joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach.

"We are extremely excited to have Josh join the Georgetown family," Cartwright said. "Josh brings a wealth of experience and has had great success in a short amount of time coaching at Missouri State University. The excitement, energy and passion he will bring to the deck will certainly help us in achieving our goals in moving forward in the BIG EAST Conference. Josh has both competed for and coached under some of the best coaches in the country. We are honored to have him a part of this program."

Wegrzyn comes to the Hilltop after serving as the assistant swim coach at Missouri State University since 2003. While at Missouri State, Wegrzyn took over the sprint, backstroke and butterfly group. His three years of coaching at MSU produced three-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference titles on the women's side while the men won two championships. In three years, he coached 23 female and 17 male Missouri Valley Conference champions while four student-athletes (one male, three female) were named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Year. In addition, the women set 11 school records (six individual, five relay) and the men set eight school records (four individual, four relay). This last year, the MSU women set four conference relay records.

While at Missouri State, he helped with the recruiting aspect of finding student-athletes to participate in competitive swimming in an academic environment while also implementing various group-specific dry-land programs aimed at improving flexibility and strength.

Additionally, he organized the practice and meet schedule for both the men's and women's swimming and diving programs and arranged all travel accommodations for the Missouri State Bears. He led team building experiences through social events and helped out with fundraising as well.

Wegrzyn started his college career at Lincoln College and was tabbed the 1998 NJCAA Swimmer of the Year and set NJCAA national records in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke before transferring to Southwest Missouri State. While swimming for the Bears, Wegrzyn was an NCAA Division I National Qualifier in four events. He was named the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Year and was an Academic All-Conference selection the two years he competed for Southwest Missouri State University. He earned a bachelor of science degree in geography information systems in 2002 and earned his second degree, a bachelor of science in organizational communications, in 2003. In 2005, he earned a masters degree in international affairs administration.

"Joining the athletics department at Georgetown University is a tremendous opportunity," Wegrzyn said. "Being part of an institution of learning with such high standards gives you a real sense of importance and also serves as a daily reminder of how lucky I am to be joining such a reputable university. I am really looking forward to working with the student athletes at Georgetown and I expect great things for this team in the coming season."

Special thanks to Georgetown for contributing this report.
