GREENSBORO- Cal’s Cierra Runge shocked herself at her first PAC-12s by winning the 500 free in an NCAA-record setting time of 4:31.90. Her record did not stand for long, as UVA’s Leah Smith busted out a 4:30.37 in prelims on day one of NCAAs. Tonight, Runge grabbed second place in the 500 free, which is not at all shabby for a freshman.

Runge was elated with her finish, but is already looking forward to racing her 200 free tomorrow. More nerves are conjured up for a sprint like the 200, but Runge is leaning on her team and Coach Teri McKeever’s advice for support. Hear more about the speedy freshman’s first NCAA experience below!
