TUCSON – Some major performances in two Southeastern Conference rivalry dual meets helped the Florida Gators supplant the Texas Longhorns in this week’s rankings of the top 25 Division I men’s swimming and diving teams by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The poll is produced in conjunction with Swimming World Magazine.

The goal of the CSCAA rankings committee is to produce an in-season poll of the 25 best-performing teams in rank order at the time of each poll. The poll is not designed to predict the results of the NCAA Championship, but rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country.

Specifically, the poll committee does not differentiate between the types of meets, or the status of a specific team in terms of rested versus unrested, when considering votes. Further, rankings are only based on performances that have taken place up to that point in the season, with an emphasis on action from the previous poll.

Swimming World has been invited as a media member to participate in the polling process, and has a vote in each poll. Jeff Commings serves as Swimming World’s representative on these weekly conference calls.

Harvard at #4, with a schedule made up of Ivy League cupcakes? Where is the laugh track? Ahead of undefeated powerhouses like Stanford(#12), Cal(#7) and Michigan(#6????), the latter which counts wins against Texas(#2) and Louisville(#11) along with solid Big 10 victims (i.e. OSU #9)? The entire poll loses any credibility, regardless of any stipulations about supposed in season nature of the poll. “… rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country.” Even if you disregard season bests which might include rested swims from first semester invitationals (where Michigan’s results OVERWHELMINGLY dominate Harvard), anyone who would argue with a straight face that Harvard would beat any of these undefeated squads in any in season dual or invitational event at this point, even when Harvard has just rested at least to some degree (if someone wishes to dispute this, lets have the conversation again at the end of the season after everyone has rested) for its annual Princeton/Yale “forget the rest of the season, our pride is at stake” event, is nuts. Michigan’s most recent meet was v. Ohio State. In comparing Harvard’s recent results from its 2 day Ivy League Dual Champs meet v Princeton and Yale to the Michigan results v. Ohio State, Harvard had faster times in both backstrokes, the 200 breast and the 500. Michigan was faster in the remaining events, including numerous 1-2 sweeps. The Crimson is a pretty good team but let’s get real. Maybe the edge of the top-10, but #4? Not even close.

See my rant from one of the last times. This is an idiotic poll with no internal validity. Beyond Harvard, you have Florida, who I think is a good team jumping over Texas who had two mega wins? You have Auburn, who is 4-4 at 5th. Cal is 7th and is undefeated with good wins since last time but dropped 4 spots. Georgia dropped from 2nd to 8th by winning two meets. Seriously, this is a bad poll. I would stop reporting on it.
