FISU Names Kazan, Russia Host of 2013 World University Games

BRUSSELS, Belgium, June 4. THIS weekend, the International University Sports Federation, more commonly known as FISU, awarded the 2013 Summer World University Games to Kazan, Russia. Kazan beat out bids from Gwangju, Korea and Vigo, Spain for the right to host the event.

Kazan had been a candidate-city for the 2011 Summer Universiade when the decision was made in 2007, but fell to Shenzhen, China's superior bid. Kazan wasted no effort this year to make sure 2013 would be held in its city.

Kazan already has more than 50 venues in place for the event, and has developed a tradition of hosting sporting events over the past two years with more than 30 international contests being held in the city.

FISU also awarded the 2013 Winter World University Games to Maribor, Slovenia at the same meeting.

While Shenzhen, China earned 2011 hosting duties, Belgrade, Serbia will host the 2009 Summer Universiade before Kazan is on tap.

Special thanks to FISU for contributing to this report.
