Emmaus Tops Pennsylvania Class AAA Competition Despite Winter Storm

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, March 28. THE same winter storm that brought the women's competition to a timed final format affected the men as well at the 2007 Pennsylvania Class AAA State Championship.

Team Scores

Emmaus came out on top in the end, racking up 193 points. Conestoga Valley followed behind in second (163) while North Allegheny finished third in the team standings with 144 points.

200 medley relay

Unionville's foursome of Shane Austin, Brent Sanderson, Jon Wertz and Jon Austin placed first in the first event of the meet with a time of 1:35.09.

Conestoga had the misfortune of swimming in the first heat and settled for second place in 1:35.87. Cathedral Prep recorded the third fastest time (1:36.18).

200 freestyle

David Gordon of Emmaus swam a strong back half, propelling him past West Chester Henderson's Andrew Fink after the 100 mark. Gordon won the event in an even 1:40.00.

Fink placed second in 1:41.28 while Parkland's Mac Anthony claimed the third spot with a 1:42.54.

200 IM

Cedar Crest's Cody Weik wowed the crowd with a 1:48.36 finish in his 200 IM win. Weik's swim erased current University of Virginia standout Pat Mellors's 1:49.58 record which he set in the 2003 state meet.

Alexander Kluge of Emmaus finished second in 1:53.49, and West Chester Henderson's Ken McCormick eked in the third-place spot with a 1:54.45 time.

50 freestyle

Three seniors captured the top three places in the 50 freestyle.

Conestoga Valley's Chase Caruso pounded the wall first in 20.92. Zachary Kohl of Governor Mifflin finished second (20.97) while Matt Gruszecki of Souderton finished third (21.08).

100 butterfly

Douglas Dietrich II of Central Catholic edged out Kevin Brazitis of Manheim Township for the win in the 100 butterfly, clocking 50.95.

Brazitis settled for second with a 51.09 while Owen J. Roberts senior Mike Volpe placed third in 51.30.

200 freestyle relay

Parkland's relay quartet of Demetri Karedis, Richard Sanders, Kyle Armbruster and Anthony edged out West Chester Henderson for first place with a time of 1:25.24.

West Chester Henderson recorded the second-best time (1:25.30) while North Allegheny finished third (1:25.72).

100 freestyle

Kohl bested the field in the 100 freestyle and earned the only 100 freestyle time under 46 (45.76). Gruszecki went a 46.10 and placed second while Fink rounded out the top three with a 46.20 time.

500 freestyle

For the second year in a row, a battle ensued in the 500 freestyle. This time, it came in the form of Joe Kinderwater.

Gordon started out strong in the first 200, but Kinderwater caught him and widened the gap as the race progressed. Kinderwater finished the race just off of the state mark in 4:26.80.

Gordon fended off district rival Anthony, who gained ground on Gordon toward the conclusion of the race, for second place (4:29.58). Anthony locked up the bronze medal in a 4:30.90 time.

100 backstroke

Weik finished the 100 backstroke unscathed, winning his second individual event of the meet in 50.45.

Chris Sheerer from Conestoga Valley touched the wall second (51.73) while Kluge placed third (51.94).

100 breaststroke

Sanderson hit the National Federation Honor Roll time dead-on in his 100 breaststroke (57.30), taking his second gold of the meet.

Mitch Scherer from Owen J. Roberts clocked a 57.91 and finished second while Wissahickon's Rich Ryan took third (58.47).

400 freestyle relay

Conestoga Valley locked up its second-place team finish with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Caruso, Drew Wissler, Sheerer and Josh Nyce won the event in 3:08.39.

Just .01 separated Parkland (3:09.08) from West Chester Henderson (3:09.09) for second and third place, respectively.

Diving Results

Dave Roberts from Perkioman Valley posted an impressive 513.35 score in the diving competition en route to claiming the top spot. Dan Schoendorfer from Central Bucks South took second (488.50) while Brian Gemberling from Neshaminy placed third (468.00).
