Dave Salo, Bob Bowman, Catherine Vogt Named Head Coaches for U.S. Worlds Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, February 20. USA Swimming today named Dave Salo, Bob Bowman and Catherine Vogt as the head coaches for the U.S. swim team at the upcoming 2013 FINA World Championships. The World Championships will be held July 19 to August 4 in Barcelona, Spain.

Salo will coach the women's swim team in Barcelona while Bowman will serve as the head coach for the men's team. Vogt will serve as the head coach for the U.S. swimmers competing in the open water competition. The swimming portion of the competition will take place July 28 and run through August 4, while open water competition will take place on July 20, 22-23, 24 and 27.

“On behalf of the National Team at USA Swimming, I am very pleased to have Dave, Bob and Catherine on board as the head coaches of the U.S. team in Barcelona,” said Frank Busch, USA Swimming's National Team Director. “Their coaching accomplishments and leadership will be important to our team as we look to build upon the success that U.S. swimmers experienced at the 2012 Olympics.”

Both Salo and Bowman served as assistant coaches for the U.S. swim team at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Vogt was also in London, working with the Tunisian coaching staff.

London marked Salo's third time (2004, 2000) on the U.S. Olympic coaching staff. In 2008, Salo was a member of Tunisia's Olympic coaching staff. Salo is currently in his seventh year as the head swim coach at the University of Southern California and has coached a strong group of U.S. Olympic medalists, including Rebecca Soni, Ricky Berens, Eric Shanteau, Jessica Hardy and Haley Anderson. Prior to his time at USC, Salo was the head coach for the Irvine Novaquatics from 1990 to 2006.

London marked Bowman's third-straight Olympic Games as an assistant coach for the men's team. Bowman guided Michael Phelps to become the most decorated Olympian ever, with 22 total medals, 18 of which are gold. Bowman also coached Allison Schmitt to an impressive 2012 Olympic performance, in which she earned five medals, three of them gold. Bowman also served as the head coach for the U.S. men's team at the 2009 and 2007 FINA World Championships. He is currently the head coach and general manager of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in Maryland.

Vogt is in her fifth year as an assistant men's and women's swim coach at USC. Before moving to Los Angeles, Vogt worked for three years as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina. At the 2012 Olmpic Games, Vogt helped coach Tunisian swimmer Ous Mellouli to a gold in the open water 10K and bronze in the 1500m free. She also worked with Haley Anderson , who won a silver medal in the women's 10K. In 2009, Vogt served as the head coach for the 2009 U.S. Open Water World Championship team. The team was extremely successful in Rome, taking home one silver, one bronze, and finishing fourth in team scoring among 36 nations.
