City of Milan Invitational: Fabio Scozzoli Posts Top-Ranked Time

MILAN, Italy, March 12. THE City of Milan Invitational produced a world bellwether mark today. The first two days of swimming took place in long course, while Sunday will finish in short course according to the meet program.

Fabio Scozzoli vaulted to the top of the world in the men's 50 breast with a winning 27.72. That swim cleared Glenn Snyders (27.94) and Hendrik Feldwehr (27.96) for the top times in the world. Andrea Toniato took second in 28.58, while Francesco Broglia snared third in 28.59. Scozzoli also moved to 10th in the world in the men's 100 breast with a 1:01.57 for the win. Flavio Bizzarri (1:03.67) and Andrea Toniato (1:03.70) touched second and third.

Cesare Sciocchetti tied Ryan Napoleon for fourth in the world rankings in the men's 400 free with a winning 3:50.97. Samuel Pizzetti took second in 3:53.49, while Federico Colbertaldo wound up third in 3:54.48.

Luca Dotto (22.49), Marco Orsi (22.50) and Sergey Fesikov (22.56) all moved into the top 10 in the men's 50 free with a 1-2-3 finish. Fesikov also posted a top 10 time with a 49.60 to win the men's 100 free. Marco Orsi placed second in 50.09, while Luca Dotto took third in 50.10.

Zsuzsanna Jakabos followed up a double yesterday with a winning time of 4:43.65 in the women's 400 IM. That swim pushed her to eighth in the world rankings. Francesca Aceto placed second in 4:52.84, while Alessia Polieri earned third in 4:53.81.

Arianna Barbieri took ninth in the world with a triumphant time of 28.76 in the women's 50 back. Laura Letrari (29.68) and Carlotta Zofkova (29.81) placed second and third. Barbieri also clocked a top 15 time in the women's 100 back with a 1:01.44 for the win. Zofkova (1:03.41) and Carlotta Fiordoro (1:04.60) placed second and third.

Paolo Facchinelli moved into the top 10 in the world in the men's 50 fly with a 24.20, while Evgeny Korotyshkin joined him with a 24.24 for second. Milorad Cavic grabbed third overall in 24.31. Korotyshkin later won the men's 100 fly in 53.45, while Facchinelli took second in 54.57. Denny Ferroni touched third in 54.95.

Dorothea Brandt claimed the women's 50 fly title in 27.28, while Elena Di Liddo finished second in 27.58. Ilaria Bianchi wound up third in 27.90. Brandt doubled up with a 55.92 to win the women's 100 free. Agnes Mutina (55.94) and Erica Buratto (56.84) completed the top three. Bianchi followed with a 1:00.05 to win the women's 100 fly, while Jakabos took second in 1:00.13. Elena Di Liddo finished third in 1:00.21. Brandt grabbed her third title of the day with a 25.29 in the women's 50 free. Miroslava Najdanovski took second in 26.25, while Letrari finished third in 26.28.

Nicol Valentini snagged the women's 50 breast in 32.74, while Michele Guzzetti took second in 32.80. Ilaria Scarcella picked up third in 32.95. Valentini doubled with a 1:10.47 to win the women's 100 breast. Scarcella placed second in 1:10.65, while Nadia Higl earned third in 1:11.03.

Mirco Di Tora won the men's 100 back in 55.55. Mauro Pizzamiglio touched second in 55.84, while Fabio Laugeni earned third in 56.10. Di Tora doubled up with a 25.57 to win the men's 50 back. Pizzamiglio finished second in 25.66, while Felix Wolf took third in 26.49.

Yannick Lebherz captured the men's 400 IM with a 4:23.17, while Luca Angelo Dioli (4:28.36) and Francesco Pavone (4:30.87) finished second and third. Mutina turned around in the evening session with a winning 4:15.85 in the women's 400 free.

Evelyn Verrasto topped the women's 200 IM in 2:16.61, while Camilla Dal Rio (2:18.66) and Valentina Pompili (2:19.95) placed second and third. Dioli paced the men's 200 IM in 2:04.55 with Davide Cova (2:05.51) and Simone Geni (2:05.70) rounding out the top three.
