Alexander Dale Oen was memorialized with a statue in his hometown of Oygarden, Norway, today, with more than a hundred locals on hand to honor the late swimming star.

Dale Oen, who died April 30, 2012, of cardiac arrest in Flagstaff, Ariz., during a training camp, would have turned 30 years old last Thursday. His legacy lives on in Norwegian swimming and in those around the world who raced him and called him friend. He was the 2011 world champion in the 100 breast and 2008 Olympic silver medalist.

The statue, designed by sculptor Arne Meland, was unveiled at the Coastal Museum in Oygarden, where more than 3 million krone was spent for renovations. The event featured a concert where songs were performed by various Norwegian celebrities. Dale Oen’s brother, Robin, was on hand to see the likeness of his younger brother displayed at the entrance to the museum. For those who understand Norwegian, enjoy his interview on NRK:

A special English-language song and music video, called “Moments of Joy,” was created to make its premiere at the ceremony today. The song was written and performed by 18-year-old Norwegian Isabel Park, with co-writing duties by her mother, Magnhild Thomassen. The video features dancing by Marit Halvorsen, as well as footage of Dale Oen from various meets including his time on the podium at the 2008 Olympics and the 2011 world championships. Dale Oen became a national treasure after his 2011 world title in the 100 breast, as it came less than a week after a gunman killed close to 100 people.

Dale Oen tributes will likely continue this weekend at the Bergen Swim Festival, which will be swum at the Alexander Dale Oen Arena. This meet will mark the first major international competition in the pool, which featured renovations last year.
