DAVIS, Calif., February 22. THE No. 15 Arizona State water polo team closed out its first day of competition at the UC Davis Shootout Saturday in Davis, Calif., with another 10-goal performance, this time defeating fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) member Pacific, 10-4, in non-conference action. The win was the fourth in a row for the Sun Devils and pushed their record to 6-4 on the season (0-0 MPSF).
Following the first period with ASU taking an early 2-0 lead on goals from Kimberlee Stevens (So., Lodi, Calif.) and Katie Davis (Sr., Riverside, Calif.), the Sun Devils exploded for five tallies in the second stanza to grab a commanding 7-0 lead at the half. Lauren Jacobson (So., League City, Texas), Katie Hedley (Fr., Lake Forest, Calif.), Davis, Ashley Bower (Fr., Bondi Beach, Australia) and Adriane Mota (So., Long Beach, Calif.) each scored in the second frame to build the lead.
In the third quarter, Stevens added her second goal and Davis her third to push the lead to 9-0 before the Tigers broke onto the scoreboard with a pair of goals. The final period saw two more UOP goals scored before Jacobson added her second goal of the contest with 40 seconds remaining in the game.
In the field, Bower recorded three assists with Elaine Bentley (So., San Diego, Calif.) and Tessa Wyborny (So., League City, Texas) adding one helper each. Goalies Jennifer Sanderson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Kristie Meyer (So., Reno, Nev.) each added two assists from the opposite end of the pool. In goal, Sanderson shutout the Tigers for the first two periods while stopping four shots. Meyer closed out the game for the Sun Devils with four saves of her own.
The Sun Devils return to the pool Sunday with another pair of games in championship pool competition. Arizona State will face No. 5 San Diego State at 9:30 a.m. before closing out the tournament with a 1:15 p.m. contest with No. 17 UC San Diego. Between ASU, SDSU and UCSD, the winner of the pool will finish first in the tournament with second earning second placing and third taking third place overall.
