SYDNEY, Australia, January 18. THE hosts and the Japanese contingent traded win streaks as someone from each country stood atop the podium for each event this evening at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. The meet is taking place in long course meter format.
Australia's Jemma Schlicht cleared 56 seconds in the women's 100 free with a 55.94 to beat the meet record of 56.02 set by Ellese Zalewski in 2007. Meanwhile, Australia went 1-2-3 in the event with Alexandra Purcell (56.02) and Celeste Astorino (56.52) taking second and third.
Australia's Alexander Graham twice set the meet record in the men's 100 free. First, he clocked a 50.17 in prelims before racing to a 50.07 to win the finale. Regan Leong (50.16) and Mack Horton (50.35) finished second and third in the event.
Australia's Jenna Strauch raced to victory in the women's 100 breast with a 1:09.01 after breaking the meet record in prelims with a1:08.90. Jessica Hansen placed second in 1:09.07, while Hungary's Dalma Sebestyen finished third in 1:10.21.
Japan's Kohei Goto snapped the Aussie win streak with a 1:02.23 in the finale of the men's 100 breast. That broke the meet record of 1:02.73 he set during prelims. Teammate Kazusa Araya finished second in 1:02.65, while Australia's Jesse King placed third in 1:03.78.
Japan went back-to-back as Yui Ohashi set the meet record in the women's 400 IM with a 4:43.54. That swim beat the 4:43.72 set by Miyu Otsuka back in 2009. Canada's Sydney Pickrem finished second in 4:44.05, while Japan's Wakaba Tsuyuucki earned third in 4:44.09.
The men's 400 IM meet record of 4:19.99 set by Chuck Sayao in 2001 became the first event mark to survive this week as Japan's Ryo Fujimoto won in 4:21.61. New Zealand's Bradlee Ashby claimed second in 4:27.31, while Canada's Evan White wound up third in 4:27.63.
Japan's Maho Takiguchi, Rino Hosoda, Tsuzumi Hasegawa and Chihiro Igarashi won the women's 800 free relay in 8:07.54, downing the meet record in the process. Australia's Jack McLoughlin, Regan Leong, Damian Fyfe and Luke Percy topped the men's 800 free relay with a meet-record 7:27.69.
