GIFU, Japan, September 16. A day after a stunning world record performance by Akihiro Yamaguchi at the Japanese National Sports Festival, two Japanese relay records took a tumble in Gifu.
Daiya Seto also downed the meet record in the men's 400 IM with a swift 4:10.10, ahead of favorite Kosuke Hagino, who settled for silver in 4:13.14. Seto jumped to sixth in the world with his sterling effort in the distance medley, behind Hagino's 4:08.94 from the Olympics.
Tokyo's foursome, comprised of Kento Ito, Masayuki Kishida, Tadashi Muramatsu and Masaru Nakamata, raced to a 1:28.69 to win the men's 200 freestyle relay. This performance undercut the Japanese record of 1:29.25 heading into the event.
Meanwhile, Tokyo's Shoko Tanabe, Haruka Ueda, Yuka Kato and Mai Harada threw down a 1:41.61 to win the women's 200 freestyle relay. That effort surpassed the previous national standard of 1:42.38 in the sprint freestyle relay.
In the women's 400 free relay, Kanagawa's Maho Takiguo, Chihiro Igarashi, Satomi Aoki and Rino Hosoda won in a Japanese high school record of 3:42.81. Saitama's Tory Maruyama, Takeru Ichiro, Hisashi Tsukahara and Seto downed the meet record in the men's 800 free relay with a 7:22.67. Kenji Konagaya also lowered the meet record in the men's 100 free with a 48.99.
