YMCA National Long Course Championships: Middle Tyger Wins Team Championship

ATLANTA, Georgia, July 27. MIDDLE Tyger wrapped up another successful YMCA Nationals meet with a convincing team victory over Wilton Family YMCA. Middle Tyger recorded 1,161.5 points, while Wilton had 958. The Triangle Area YMCA placed third with 911 points.

The final night of competition at the YMCA National Long Course Championships kicked off with a couple of sprint relays. In the women's 200m free relay, Middle Tyger's Katrina Konopka, Ali Snover, Ali Galyer and Haley Lips crushed their own national record from last summer, posting a 1:46.31 to take a second and a half off the old time. On the men's side, Triangle Area dominated the race from start to finish, as Joe Bonk, Colin Ellington, Bailey Maloney and Ben Mayes obliterated Darien Community's record of 1:36.24 with a 1:33.96.

The men's 800m free title went to Matthew Moen of Wilton in 8:25.03, with Somerset Hills' Bradley Wachenfel in second (8:26.84) and Countryside's Kevin George (8:28.61) in third.

Greater Flint's Courtney Weaver picked up a third win in the women's 200m fly with a 2:13.34, well in front of Waynesboro's Remedy Rule (2:15.01) and Huntington's Morgan Carr (2:17.22). Leo Lim of Wyckoff lowered the third national record of the night with a stellar time of 2:02.39 in the men's 200m fly, which bettered Josh Friedel's 2:03.13 from 2009. Andrew Yunker of Greater Flint took second in 2:04.09, while Middle Tyger's Justin Mehl and Wilton's Sean Higgins swam matching 2:04.94s for third.

In the women's 50m back, Wyckoff's Danielle Bach hit the touch pads first in the only time under 30 seconds, a 29.93. Maggie Miller of Elkins swam a 30.23 for second, while Marianne Kahmann of Coffman rounded out the top three in 30.25. The men's race went to Upper Main Line's Nic Graesser, who touched in 26.01 for his first win of the meet. Gregoriy Tarasevich of Orlando picked up second in 26.20, with Red Bank's Sam Lynch in third (27.41).

Triangle Area's Olivia Ontjes rolled to a commanding victory in the women's 100m breast, touching in 1:12.90 to easily outdistance Somerset Valley's Rachel Stoddard (1:14.18) and Springfield's Kendra Crew (1:14.24). Wilton's Eric Ronda captured the men's 100m breast title in 1:04.38, a touch ahead of Door County's Conner McHugh (1:04.62). Zack Warner of Somerset Valley claimed third in 1:05.60.

As was the story for most of the competition, the meet closed with two more national YMCA records in the women's and men's 400m medley relays. Middle Tyger again claimed the women's race with a 4:16.94, as Ali Galyer, Savanna Faulconer, Haley Lips and Katrina Konopka cut almost two seconds off their own record of 4:18.78 from 2009. Meanwhile, Somerset Valley's Dylan Sali, Zack Warner, Jeffrey Donovin and Brad Zdroik clipped 3.42 seconds off Middle Tyger's 2011 record with a 3:50.99 to wrap up the meet.
