Mark Gangloff Lights Up Southeastern LSC Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, July 20. JUST days after the U.S. Olympic Team graced the pool at the University of Tennessee, the Southeastern LSC Championships kicked off with a bang in Knoxville, Tenn. Mark Gangloff, who missed out on a third Olympic bid this year after claiming gold medals as part of the men's 400 medley relay in both 2004 and 2008, unfurled a scorcher in the men's 100-meter breaststroke tonight.

Gangloff raced to 59.76, more than six seconds ahead of second-place finisher Michael Duderstadt's 1:05.98. Gangloff went out in 27.85, before coming back in 31.91. Gangloff's 50 split trails only Kevin Cordes' 27.84 from Trials as the top 50 for an American this year, while his 59.76 jumped him to sixth in the world this year. Only Brendan Hansen, who won the men's 100 breast at Trials, has a faster time among the U.S. this year with a 59.68.

Gangloff missed making the Olympic squad this year with a fifth-place time of 1:00.74 at the Trials in Omaha. Hansen (59.68) and Eric Shanteau (1:00.15) snared the top two spots, with Cordes taking third in 1:00.58 after throwing down the aforementioned 27.84 at the halfway mark.
