YPSILANTI, Michigan, November 21. ONE national record and several division records fell during the Michigan Girls High School State Championships Nov. 18-19. The Division 1 meet was held in Ypsilanti, Division 2 swimmers traveled to Holland and Rochester was the site of the Division 3 championships. All three meets were swum in short course yards.
Division 1
Ann Arbor Huron senior Anna DeMonte set divisional standards in both her victories. She came within a half-second of the state record in the 200 IM with her 1:59.67 and posted a 54.56 in the 100 back.
Two seniors also set Division 1 records. Bloomfield Hills Marian's Jaynie Pulte sprinted to a 23.23 in the 50 free, and Lake Orion's Jaynie Pulte cruised to a 50.32 in the 100 free.
Maddie Wright, a freshman at Waterford United, became a double-event champion in her first high school championship with her triumphs in the 200 free (1:49.04) and 100 fly (54.82). Marah Pugh, a sophomore at Macomb Dakota, was tops in the 500 free with her 4:55.54, as was Ashleigh Shanley, a junior at Ann Arbor Skyline, in the 100 breast (1:03.91). Rochester's Lauren Reedy, a senior, was the top diver with 458.00 points.
Hudsonville's team of seniors Michaela Rookus and Audra Thornton, plus sophomore Makayla Myers and junior Danielle Freeman, set a divisional record of 1:35.46 in the 200 free relay and swept the freestyle relays with their 3:27.65 400 free relay victory. Saline's quartet of juniors Maddy Frost, Emily Lau and Cristina Czyrka, plus senior Sammy Richart, earned a divisional standard in the 200 medley with their 1:45.97 win.
Farmington Hills Mercy grabbed the team title with 258 points, followed by Saline's 243.5, Bloomfield Hills Marian's 165, Hudsonville's 156 and Ann Arbor Huron's 153.
Division 2
Holland High School ran away with the team title, scoring 419 points. Holland's team of Courtney Bartholomew (senior), Melissa Vandermeulen (junior), Taylor Garcia (freshman) and Holly Morren (sophomore) started the meet off by posting a 1:41.12 in the prelims of the 200 medley relay. That erased Carmel's 2011 time of 1:41.42 from the record books. The girls came back in finals to further lower the mark to 1:41.01. Bartholomew led off in 24.66, followed by Vandermeulen's 29.38, Garcia's 24.11 and Morren's 22.86.
Holland ended the meet with a Division 2 standard in the 400 free relay (3:24.46). Contributing to that victory were Morran, Garcia, senior Klare Northhuis and Bartholomew. Holland came within 8-hundredths of a relay sweep, but Birmingham Groves' squad of sophomore Hanna Pfershy, junior Beth Moran, and seniors Taylor Pfershy and Annie Lazor put together a 1:36.43 over Holland's seniors Klare Northuis, Nicole Cordero, Haley Thompson and sophomore Cassie Misiewicz' 1:36.51.
Holland swimmers grabbed the majority of wins. Bartholomew set a state record 51.99 in the 100 back and added a second victory with a Division 2 record 2:00.06 in the 200 IM. Garcia lowered the 100 fly Division 2 mark to 54.39 and grabbed a second victory in the 50 free (23.46). Thompson snagged the 200 free win in 1:51.87, and Misiewicz was tops in the 500 free (5:03.58).
Second place went to Birmingham Seaholm, which put together 288 points. Senior Kelly Frazier was first in the diving competition with 433.45 points. Birmingham Groves scored 216 points, good for third place, with Lazor capturing the 100 breast (1:02.43). Grosse Pointe South's fourth-place total of 216 points was led by freshman Catherine DeLoof's first-place 50.80 in the 100 free. Rounding out the top five was Harrison with 161 points.
Division 3
Plainwell freshman Mallory Comerford was the only divisional record setter during the Division 3 meet with her 50.46 in the 100 free. She added a second triumph in the 50 free (23.62).
Three other swimmers put together two wins each. Cranbrook-Kingwood junior Kylie Powrie was victorious in both the 200 free (1:54.98) and 500 free (5:04.30). Ines Charles, a sophomore at Bloomfield Hills Lahser, was tops in the 100 back (56.20) and 100 fly (57.21). Another sophomore, East Grand Rapids' Anna Stephens, scored triumphs in the 100 breast (1:05.75) and 200 IM (2:08.14). Stephens' teammate, junior Olivia Kassouni, was first in 1-meter diving with 451.45 points.
Just 1-tenth separated first from second in the 200 free relay. Holland Christian's squad of senior Kaylie Wierda, sophomore Ashlee Sall, senior Kelsey Weener and freshman Sydney Asselin combined for a 1:38.43-1:38.53 triumph over Cranbrook-Kingswood's team of senior Milon Crawford, juniors Madeline Montogmery and Emma Reasoner, plus freshman Lara Kokubo.
The other relay victories were enjoyed by Bloomfield Hills Lahser's team of Charles, sophomore Hailey Sambor, junior Lucy Ramonat and sophomore Mary Pilibosian in the 200 medley (1:48.23) and Cranbrook-Kingswood's quartet of senior Molly Laubernds, Montgomery, Powrie and Kokubo.
Cranbrook-Kingswood emerged as the top team with their 328.5 point total, followed by East Grand Rapids with 265.5 points. Plainwell and Bloomfield Hills Lahser tied for third with 182 points each, and Holland Christian's total of 141 points was good for fifth.
