Did You Really Expect the Michael Phelps Camp to Confirm His Comeback?

Commentary by Brent Rutemiller

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 19. CASEY Barrett and Peter Busch got the story right. Michael Phelps is going to come back and compete again for the United States in the sport of swimming.

The Associated Press, Baltimore Sun, New York Daily News, Sports illustrated, Sporting News, and Huffington Post all picked up on their comeback reports first linked together by Swimming World.

Busch's and Barrett's sources were reliable at the time. Problem is that everyone spoke out of turn. Until it comes out of Phelps' mouth, there is always a chance it will never happen.

And that, my friends, is exactly how Michael Phelps wants to control it.

Phelps knows how to play the media. We have seen it frequently. He is clever and coy. He knows when to be innocent and when to be wise. He knows when to be straight forward and when to look the other way.

The Phelps comeback announcement will be on a grander stage than media reports, Twitter or Facebook.

Look for an announcement through a media event or press conference. In the meantime, expect denials but don't discredit current reports.
