Kevin Cordes Blasts Fastest 100-Yard Breast of All Time!

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 29. ARIZONA's Kevin Cordes now stands as the fastest 100-yard breaststroke ever after a brilliant swim at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

After blasting the third-fastest swim ever with an American-record 50.93 in prelims, Cordes blistered the field with a 50.74 split 23.87, 26.87 in the finale. That time cleared Damir Dugonjic's previous NCAA and U.S. Open record of 50.86 set back in 2009 for California.

Cordes also defended his title from 2012, becoming just the 15th swimmer to win multiple titles in the event. As a sophomore, he's also still on pace to become just the third swimmer to ever pull off a career sweep in the event. Brendan Hansen (2001-04) and Steve Lundquist (1980-83) are the only swimmers to have ever pulled off that feat.

Cordes' training partner Kevin Steel threw down a 27.79 in the final 50 to pull into second with a time of 51.69. That moved Steel to sixth all time in the event's history, with the time standing 15th all time. Michigan's Richard Funk jumped to 10th all time with a third-place time of 51.84, while Georgia's Nicolas Fink earned fourth-place honors in 51.85. That jumped Fink to 11th all time in the event's history.

USC's Vlad Morozov placed fifth overall with a strong 52.01, while California's Trevor Hoyt (52.35) and Missouri's Sam Tierney (52.65) placed sixth and seventh. Indiana's Cody Miller, who had the officials' eyes after a similar disqualification at Big Tens, drew a disqualification for an illegal downward butterfly kick. Arizona's Carl Mickelson touched in 51.93 to win the B final.

Michigan still was well out front in the team-title race with 287 points. California stood second with 233.5 points. Arizona (191.5), Southern California (180) and Texas (159) rounded out the top five.
