All Clear on IUPUI Campus After Five-Hour Lockdown Due to Gunman

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 19. THE IUPUI campus, the site of the NCAA Men's and Women's Division I Championships during the next week-and-a-half, is currently on lockdown due to “a man with what may be a long gun” being seen in one of the parking lots according to WISH-TV.

The parking lot was lot 59, and the school is “asking student, employees, and anyone in the area to seek shelter. The school says all buildings are on lockdown. They are asking people to avoid campus.”

This means that all swimmers currently at the facility in preparation for the meet are not going to be leaving the IU Natatorium any time soon.

The IndyStar, meanwhile, has reported that no shots have been fired and that “police are looking for a white man wearing a brown trench coat who got out of a green car.”

Swimming World's staff photographer Peter H. Bick is currently at the IU Natatorium, and under lockdown. He arrived just as the lockdown is in place, and has explained that no one is being allowed out of their locked-down locations. He is currently in an office in the building, while he has been told swimmers have been locked down in the lockerrooms.

IUPUI sophomore swimmer Tony Carroll also reports that swimmers are currently in full lock down at the IU Natatorium, according to his Twitter account post.

Multiple NCAA titlist Liv Jensen of California reported via Twitter that everyone is “secure and safe” at the IU Nat, as they wait out the lockdown.

According to several local media outlets, including the IndyStar and WISH-TV, police have the Nursing building surrounded. This building is about two blocks northwest of the IU Natatorium.

As of 3:50 p.m. Eastern, IUPUI is still on full alert. However, most teams are at their hotels.

With the lockdown still in full effect as of 4:20 p.m. Eastern, teams are now finding alternative locations to get some last minute swims in.

Florida Gator Elizabeth Beisel, always good for a laugh, injected some humor into the situation.

Towson is back at the hotel safe-and-sound after the lockdown.

About five hours after the lockdown was announced, IUPUI announced an All Clear.
