Westminster Men Win Wooster Invitational, Women Second -- December 7, 2004
NEW WILMINGTON, PA, December 7. THE Westminster College men's and women's swimming teams each completed competition at the three-day Wooster Invitational in Wooster, Ohio this weekend, per reports from the college.
The Titan men finished in first place in an 11-team field with 1,615 points, easily outdistancing Case Western Reserve (1,219), Wooster (971.5), Ashland (866.5), Ohio Northern (764), Lycoming (720), Salem International (629), Penn State-Behrend (480) , Oberlin (427), John Carroll (348) and St. Vincent (8).
The Lady Titans finished in second place in the 11-team field with 1,387 points, trailing only the host Scots (1,525) and ahead of Lycoming (1,031.5), Case Western Reserve (946.5), Ohio Northern (733), Ashland (599), Oberlin (521), John Carroll (514.5), Penn State-Behrend (446), Salem International (358.5), and St. Vincent (131).
For the Titan men, sophomore Ryan Trunk (Brookline, MA/Cheshire Academy H.S.) (photo attached) led the way with three first place finishes in the final two days of competition. Trunk touched first in the 100 (46.49) and 200 freestyle (1:44.15) while also leading off for the winning Titan 400 freestyle relay team (3:11.80). Other Westminster men posting victories in the final two days included junior Josh Hensler (Pittsburgh/South Park H.S.) in the 400 IM (4:17.78) and sophomore Pat Smith (South Park/South Park H.S.) in the 100 backstroke (54.91).
The Westminster women were led by freshman Becky Giles (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop H.S.) (photo attached), who broke a pair of school records in the final two days at Wooster. Giles captured the 200 backstroke in 2:10.53, breaking the school mark of 2:11.99 set by Tara Crawford in 2001. She also placed third in the 400 IM in 4:39.32, topping the program record of 4:42.66 set by Brittany Jardine last season. Freshman Stephanie Peters (Finleyville/Peters Township H.S.) was also victorious in the 100 freestyle (54.64).
Westminster swimming returns to dual meet competition this Friday, Dec. 10, as the Titans (4-0, 1-0 PAC) and Lady Titans (2-2, 0-1 PAC) host league foe Bethany College at the Natatorium beginning at 6 p.m.
