Diabetic Swimmer Conquers Channel -- August 26, 1996

On August 17, 42-year-old Scott Coleman, of Boca Raton, Fla., became the first male diabetic to swim the English Channel. Coleman, a Masters swimmer who in his college days was captain of the University of Pennsylvania swim team, negotiated the 21-mile stretch between Dover, England and Cap Gris-Nez, France, in a little over 10 hours. Coleman had his blood sugar levels checked every half-hour during the swim, but did not require insulin shots.
