By Phillip Whitten

LONG BEACH, July 7. THE day’s second event, the women’s 100 meter fly, saw all of the major contenders move on to the semis, but there were some surprises.

In the final heat, Rachel Komisarz, of Lakeside Swim Club, unleashed a powerful final 15 meters to pass top-seeded Jenny Thompson and post the morning’s top time: 59.77. Misty Hyman used a great turn to win her heat in 59.91, while Dana Kirk took her heat in 59.94, as no other swimmer cracked a minute.

Jenny Thompson qualified fifth (1:00.17) while Whitney Myers was sixth (1:00.24). Eleven women broke 1:01 and it took a 1:01.29 to return for a second swim.
