NCAA Div. I: Virginia Sweeps N.C. State -- January 11, 2003

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 11. THE nationally-ranked Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams, competing in their first meet in more than a month, registered convincing victories over N.C. State at the Casey Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

The ninth-ranked Cavalier men notched a 156-85 victory, while the UVa women were triumphant by the score of 153-87. With the victories, both Virginia squads improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The ninth-ranked Virginia men won 11 of 13 events in cruising to the 156-85 victory. First-year Francis Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) and third-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) both recorded a pair of individual event victories. Crippen won the 200 and 500 freestyles in convincing fashion. He posted a time of 1:40.63 in the 200 free to win by two seconds and took the 500 free by more than 15 seconds (4:24.66). Amstutz swept the one and three-meter diving competition. He won the one-meter board with 314.78 points and set a season-high mark on the three-meter board with 311.85 points.

Third-years Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) won individual events and also swam a leg on the Cavaliers' winning 400 medley relay that tied N.C. State for first place in 3:22.41. Wagner won the 200 backstroke in 1:49.26 and was runner-up to Crippen in the 200 free (1:42.69). Anderson clocked a winning time of 45.63 in the 100 free and was second in the 200 individual medley (1:51.43).

Fourth-year Jon Baird (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and second-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) joined Wagner and Anderson on UVa's winning 400 medley relay. Raab also led a top-three Cavalier sweep in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.47. Third-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./ Buena) set a pool record in winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:13.14. The former pool record of 9:15.54 was set by Georgia Tech's Shilo Ayalon.

Third-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) tied N.C. State's Cullen Jones for first in the 50 free with a time of 21.30. Fourth-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) rounded out UVa's event winners as he grabbed the top spot in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:50.82.

In addition to Cullen tying Haag for first in the 50 free, the only other N.C. State (6-1, 2-1 ACC) swimmer to win an individual event was Rob Yeager, who won the 200 breaststroke (2:02.94).

The 12th-ranked UVa women won 10 of 13 events in recording a 153-87 victory over the Wolfpack (5-4, 1-2 ACC).

Second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) won two individual events and also swam on a winning relay in helping lead the Cavaliers to the victory. First-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) also had an excellent meet as she won two freestyle events. Georoff won the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 23.95 and 52.50, respectively, with fourth-year Lindsey Crane (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) finishing second in both events. Georoff also swam the leadoff leg on UVa's winning 400 free relay (3:37.12).

Burke began her day by winning the 1000 free in a time of 9:56.01 and then captured the 500 free with a time of 4:55.31. Joining Georoff on the winning 400 free relay were second-years Laura Lipskis (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Coco Buck (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and first-year Laura Mumper (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin).

Third-year Carlie Dykehouse's (Gainesville, Fla./
Trinity Prep) victory in the 200 free (1:52.39) made a clean Cavalier sweep of the five individual freestyle events. Dykehouse also anchored UVa's winning 400 medley relay that touched in 3:52.40. First-years Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) and Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman), and third-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) joined Dykehouse on the winning 400 medley relay.
Fourth-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/
Trinity Prep) claimed the 200 I.M. with a time of 2:05.50, while second-year Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:03.28 with Bosevska placing second (2:05.34).

First-year Corey Berg (Hyde Park, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) rounded out UVa's individual event winners as she won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:02.83.

N.C. State's Molly Culberson swept the one and three-meter diving with scores of 303.15 and 319.05, respectively.

The Cavalier men return to action on Tuesday, January 14 when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for a 2:00 p.m. meet against 11th-ranked Tennessee.
