Day 1: 1997 European Championships -- August 20, 1997

SEVILLE, Spain - Sandra Volker of Germany won her first European title in women's 100m freestyle in 55.38.

In the men's 100 breaststroke, Alexander Goukov Belarus touched out the Hungarian Karoly Guttler, in 1:02.17.

Michelle De Bruin (nee Smith) defended her European title by winning the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:42.08.

In the men's 200 freestyle, 1996 Olympic silver medalist Paul Palmer of Great Britain touched first in a time of 1:48.85.
