Thompson: USOC Athlete of Month -- May 15, 1997

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Jenny Thompson and weightlifter Tom Gough have been named USOC's April Athletes-of-the-Month for their accomplishments.

Thompson won the women's voting, collecting 7 of 9 first-place votes for her outstanding swims at the Short Course World Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. She won two gold and two silver medals, while breaking a world record and three American records. Thompson won gold and broke the world record in the 100m butterfly en route to the FINA Outstanding Performer of the Meet Award.
