Nakamura Sets World Short Course Record in the 100m Backstroke -- March 4, 2001

SAGAMIHARA, JAPAN. March 4. JAPAN'S Mai Nakamura, silver medalist in the 100 meter backstroke at the Olympic Games in Sydney last September, broke the world short course record in the 100 meter backstroke today.

Competing in a regional college meet in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan, Nakamura clocked 58.45 seconds. The previous record, 58.50, was set by the USA's Angel Martino at the First FINA Short Course World Championships in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, December 3, 1993.
