East Asian Games: Li Zhesi Rattles Asian Record in 50 Free

HONG KONG, December 10. THE East Asian Games came to a close with a few close calls when it came to Asian records in the long course meter books.

China's Li Zhesi made a run at the Asian record in the women's 50 free with a meet-record time of 24.68. She finished just a bit behind Le Jingyi's 1994 record of 24.51, while clearing Zhu Yingwen's meet record of 24.87 set in 2005. China's Tang Yi took second in 25.49, while Hong Kong's Hannah Wilson finished third in 25.70.

China's Cai Li topped the men's 50 free in 22.56, to beat the meet record of 22.82 set by Korea's Suk Kim Min back in 2001. China's Lu Zhiwu touched just behind with a second-place 22.58, while Korea's Minkyu Park placed third in 22.77.

Taipei's Wan-Jung Cheng broke through with a big victory for her country when she won the women's 400 IM in 4:40.21. That effort smashed the meet record of 4:42.84 set by Hitomi Maehara back in 1993. China's Liu Jing placed second in 4:40.34, while teammate Zheng Rongrong wound up third in 4:41.11.

Japan's Ryusuke Sakata won the men's 200 fly in 1:55.23, beating Takeshi Matsuda's meet record of 1:56.72 set back in 2005. China's Wu Peng took second in 1:56.32, while Taipei's Chi-Chieh Hsu placed third in 1:56.54.

China's Wang Xinyu claimed the women's 800 free crown in 8:37.88, while Japan's Kazuki Wakanami took second in 8:42.26. Japan's Natsumi Iwashita completed the top three in 8:47.23.

China's Sun Yang cleared the meet record in the men's 400 free with a 3:46.16. That swim beat the 3:48.71 set by Korea's Tae Hwan Park back in 2005. Japan's Sho Uchida touched second in 3:51.36, while Korea's Sangjin Jang earned third in 3:51.91.

China's Gao Chang, Wang Randi, Jiao Liuyang and Yu Yao won the women's 400 medley relay in 3:58.21. That performance smashed the meet record of 4:02.49 set by China back in 2005.

Japan's Ryosuke Irie, Ryo Tateishi, Kohei Kawamoto and Takuro Fujii snagged the men's 400 medley relay title in 3:31.71, with Irie dropping a swift 52.83 on the backstroke leadoff. The team closed within a second of the Asian record time of 3:30.74 set by Japan at the World Championships in Rome. Incidentally, the relay demolished the meet record of 3:38.88 set by Japan in 2001.
