British Short Course Grand Prix: Flash! Canada Lowers World Record in 400 Medley Relays – Splits updated

LEEDS, Great Britain, August 9. CANADA lowered both of the 400 medley relay world records to close the show at the British Short Course Grand Prix.

The Canadian foursome of Katy Murdoch (56.88), Annamay Pierse (1:03.39), Audrey Lacroix (57.29) and Victoria Poon (51.89) clocking a 3:49.95 in the women's 400 medley relay. That performance surpasses the 3:51.36 set by the U.S. in 2008.

Meanwhile, the Canadian men's teak of Jake Tapp (50.60), Paul Kornfeld (57.18), Joe Bartoch (50.18) and Brent Hayden (45.37) clocked a 3:23.33 to clear Russia's 3:24.29 world record set last year.

Full splits will be posted when complete results are made available.

Canada's Nicolas Murray claimed the men's 100 IM title in 53.84. That swim cleared his national record of 54.55 set in November 2008. Teammate Matthew Hawes placed second in 54.83, while Lewis Smith took third in 54.97.

Elizabeth Simmonds just missed her British record of 2:20.60 in the women's 200 back with a triumphant time of 2:02.63. Katy Murdoch of Canada finished second in 2:03.31 to cut a large amount of time from her national mark of 2:06.81 set in February. Compatriot Dominique Bouchard finished third in 2:06.26.

Antony James raced to a 22.87 in the men's 50 fly for the win. He tied Mark Foster's British record set in 2001. Canada's Thomas Kindler finished second in 23.32, while teammate Joe Bartoch wound up third in 23.64. Kindler just missed Bartoch's national record of 23.31.

Victoria Poon of Canada touched first in the women's 50 free with a 24.24, smashing her national mark of 24.56 set in March. Teammate Jennifer Beckberger finished second in 24.69 with Amy Smith taking third in 24.86.

Canada's Paul Kornfeld cruised in the men's 200 breast with a winning time of 2:03.26. He demolished Morgan Knabe's national record of 2:07.15 set in 2002. Brazil's Henrique Barbosa finished second in 2:05.79, drastically undercutting his Brazilian record of 2:09.64 set in 2008. Canada's Sean Nugent completed the top three in 2:09.04.

Hannah Miley won by two seconds in the women's 400 IM with a 4:27.22. Her time clipped her national mark of 4:27.27 set in April 2008. Canada's Tanya Hunks took second in 4:29.22 to crush her previous national record of 4:32.57 set in March this year. Emma Smithurst wound up third in 4:35.20.

Ross Davenport took home the men's 200 free crown in 1:43.05. That swim eclipsed his national record of 1:43.93 set in 2005. Canada's Blake Worsley touched second in 1:43.29, while Andrew Hunter finished third in 1:44.04.

Canada swept the top three spots in the women's 200 free. Genevieve Saumur stopped the clock in 1:54.23 for the win, and the Canadian record by lowering Erica Morningstar's 1:56.11 set in February. Heather MacLean (1:55.46) and Alexandra Gabor (1:56.03) placed second and third.
