FINA World Championships, Swimming: Flash! Liam Tancock Lowers Own World Record, Wins 50 Back -- August 2, 2009

ROME, Italy, August 2. GREAT Britain's Liam Tancock clipped his world record in the men's 50 back at the FINA World Championships. Tancock blazed the pool with a 24.04 to clip his 24.08 set during semifinals of the event.


Here is the progression of the world record over the past year:

24.47 Liam Tancock, GBR – Sheffield 4-2-08
24.33 Randall Bal, USA – Eindhoven 12-5-08
24.08sf Liam Tancock, GBR – Rome 08-01-09
24.04 Liam Tancock, GBR – Rome 08-02-09

Japan's Junya Koga turned in a silver-winning time of 24.24, which is the third fastest swim of all time. South Africa's Gerhard Zandberg completed the podium with a 24.34, which is among the top five ever.

Spain's Aschwin Wildeboer (24.57), France's Camille Lacourt (24.61), Germany's Helge Meeuw (24.63), Greece's Aristeidis Grigoriadis (24.87) and Italy's Mirco Di Tora (25.15) completed the finale.
