FINA World Championships, Swimming: Flash! Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom Lowers World Record in 100 Fly

ROME, Italy, July 27. SWEDEN's Sarah Sjostrom completed a full renovation of the women's 100 fly world record at the FINA World Championships.

Having already shot down Inge de Bruijn's world record yesterday with a 56.44, Sjostrom smashed that swim with an amazing 56.06 in the finale this evening. Australia's Jessicah Schipper also beat the former record with a silver-winning time of 56.23 to knock Libby Trickett from the Australian perch. Trickett owned the previous national mark with a 56.73 from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

China's Jiao Liuyang completed the podium with a sterling 56.86, while France's Aurore Mongel took fourth in 56.89. Gabriella Silva of Brazil and Dana Vollmer of the U.S. tied for fifth with matching 56.94s. Vollmer's performance broke the American record of 57.08 previously held by Christine Magnuson.

Norway's Ingvild Snildal (56.96) and The Netherlands' Marleen Veldhuis (57.79) completed the finale.
