USA Swimming Sectionals, Gainesville: Teresa Crippen Lowers 26-Year-Old Tracy Caulkins Record

GAINESVILLE, Florida, July 18. THE third night of long course meter swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Gainesville featured a long-standing record being wiped from the record books.

Germantown's Teresa Crippen cleared a 26-year-old meet record previously held by Tracy Caulkins in the women's 200 IM. Crippen stopped the clock in 2:15.96 to beat the 2:16.55 set by Caulkins back in 1983. Fast Lane's Lysis Halkides placed second in 2:17.13, while Florida's Sarah Bateman claimed third in 2:18.82. Daytona Beach's Rex Tullius captured the men's 200 IM in 2:01.49. Florida's Conor Dwyer took second in 2:03.84, while Greater Philadelphia's Michael Joyce completed the podium in 2:05.65.

Baylor's Stephanie Napier touched out Bateman, 26.00 to 26.02, in the women's 50 free. Saint Petersburg's Kaitlin Frehling claimed third in 26.59. Swim Florida's Jon Nunez and Dwyer tied in the men's 50 free with matching 23.34s. Daytona Beach's Matthew Norton placed third in 23.45.

In another close contest, Gator's Jamie Bohunicky beat Crippen, 4:17.65 to 4:17.75, in the women's 400 free. Gator's Melania Costa Schmid touched third in 4:18.41. On top of tying for the 50 free title, Dwyer showed some range with a 3:57.08 in the men's 400 free for the win. The Bolles' Ryan Arabejo took a close second in 3:57.25. Davie's Yoelvi Pedraza finished third in 3:57.61.

Gator's Lily Ramirez (1:02.42) and Riley Flanagan (1:04.95) finished 1-2 in the women's 100 back. Club Seminole's Chelsea Hendry took third in 1:05.58. Area Tallahassee's Joe Ziegler snatched the men's 100 back in 57.65. Trinity's Michael Yuan earned second in 58.76, while The Bolles' Colin Hamilton touched third in 58.78.
