USA Swimming Sectionals, Knoxville: Bryan Lundquist Sets American Record in 50 Fly -- July 18, 2009

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, July 18. THE third night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Knoxville, Tenn., featured an American record from Bryan Lundquist. The time gave the Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatics Center its first American record since the facility opened recently.

While representing the Stingrays, Lundquist decided to get after the sprint fly national record during the men's 100 fly. Lundquist went out like a rocket with a 22.91 to become the first American under 23 seconds. He wound up taking eighth overall as he coasted home in 1:00.00.

His effort wiped out Ian Crocker's national mark of 23.12 set in 2005 in Montreal. Lundquist has a bit to go before threatening Rafael Munoz Perez's global standard. Munoz Perez touched in 22.43 earlier this year.

Notably, Virginia's Peter Geissinger won the race in 54.48, while teammate Dan McMahon finished second in 55.16. Lexington Dolphin Seth Broster wound up third in 55.41.

Meanwhile, North Carolina's Katura Harvey earned her third title of the meet with a 4:16.24 in the women's 400 free. Duke's Dania Marinshaw placed second in 4:20.52 with Georgia Coastal's Nicole Menzel taking third in 4:22.53. That top three has become familiar with each of Harvey's titles coming by way of 1-2-3 finishes with Marinshaw and Menzel this meet.

Cardinal's Riley Martin topped the men's 400 free in 4:00.52. North Carolina's Jason McLaughlin placed second in 4:01.66 with teammate Hank Browning claiming third in 4:02.92.

SwimMAC-Carolina's Lauren Harrington snatched the women's 100 fly title in 1:01.43. Lakeside's Leah Reinhardt took second in 1:02.32 with Duke's Chelsea Howard touching just behind with a third-place 1:02.34.

Tennessee's Alex Barsanti raced to a 1:11.75 in the women's 100 breast for the win. North Carolina's Layne Brodie wound up second in 1:12.17 with Marlins of Raleigh's Kirsten Smith placing third in 1:12.52.

Carolina's Armin Hornikel surfaced triumphant from a competitive men's 100 breast with a 1:04.19. Saluki's Jameson Kuper placed second in 1:04.31, while Crimson Tide's Dan Armstrong finished third in 1:04.52.
