Australian Long Course Championships: Libby Trickett Lights Up 100 Free -- March 19, 2009

SYDNEY, Australia, March 19. LIBBY Trickett proved that she is still the top female sprinter in Australia with a swift outing in the women's 100 free at the Australian Long Course Championships.

During the 100 free, Trickett dropped a sparkling time of 52.99 for the win. The performance came up just short of her world record time of 52.88. Marieke Guehrer placed second in 54.28, while Felicity Galvez (54.50) and Meagan Nay (55.10) claimed third and fourth.

Ashley Delaney opened the men's 200 back with a winning time of 1:55.82 to set a Commonwealth record. Hayden Stoeckel finished second in 1:57.38, while Robert Hurley placed third in 2:00.04.


Sally Foster touched first in the women's 200 breast with a 2:25.88, while Sarah Katsoulis (2:26.09) and Tessa Wallace (2:26.37) placed second and third. Meanwhile, Emily Seebohm won the women's 100 back in 59.85. Belinda Hocking (1:00.01) and Sophie Edington (1:00.27) completed the top three.

Christian Sprenger and Brenton Rickard needed more than 100 meters to decide who won the 100 breast as the pair dead heated at 1:00.64. Craig Calder finished third in 1:02.33. In the men's 50 fly, Andrew Lauterstein won in 23.34 while Matt Targett took second in 23.49. Matt Jaukovic placed third in 23.62 with Geoff Huegill finishing his comeback bid with a fifth-place 24.01.

Theodore Pasialis won the men's 800 free in 8:01.90, while Matthew Terry (8:30.96) and Christopher Ashwood (8:10.27) touched second and third.

In semifinal action, Eamon Sullivan took the top seed in the men's 100 free with a 48.24 with Targett finishing second in 48.79. Jessicah Schipper earned the top time in the women's 100 fly in 57.65 with Stephanie Rice second in 58.36.

In multi-disability events, Prue Watt won the 100 fly in 1:08.13, while Matt Cowdrey took the men's 100 fly in 1:00.13.

March 20, 2009 Cate Campbell has a torn ligament in her hip which is going to require surgery. This hampered her swim in the 100 but she is looking swift for the 50.
