Australian Long Course Championships: Flash! Therese Alshammar Breaks World Record in 50 Fly; Loses Record Due to Two Suits -- March 16, 2009

SYDNEY, Australia, March 16. LAST year might have featured 108 world records, but that mark might wind up being challenged as two world records fell today already.

With the women's 400 free falling in Britain, Sweden's Therese Alshammar stepped up during prelims at the Australian Long Course Championships to lower her record in the women's 50 fly.

Alshammar clipped her previous record with a top qualifying time of 25.44. That effort wiped out the 25.46 she set back in 2007 in Barcelona.

However, the Dubai Charter claimed its first victim as Alshammar was disqualified due to wearing two suits as noted in a press release by Swimming Australia:

SYDNEY, March 17: Sweden's Therese Alshammar has been disqualified after breaking her own world record, wearing two swim suits, in the 50m butterfly heats on day one of the Telstra Australian Swimming Championship at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre today.

Alshammar touched the wall in 25.44 to go under her own world mark set of 25.46, set in 2007 in Barcelona - but the record will not stand.

After five hours of meetings, Swimming Australia announced that Alshammar had in fact worn the two suits, which was confirmed by women's referee Janelle Barnett, who returned to the Aquatic Centre to view video footage of the race, confirming that a second suit had been worn.

The 31-year-old four-time Olympian is now based in Sydney and swimming at the NSWIS International Training Centre.

March 16, 2009 Maybe not on this one.
Australian papers are breaking news right now that officials are debating stripping Alshammer of this record for being caught wearing multiple suits.
This would definitely send a LOUD message around the world that the new FINA rule is now in place and IS going to be enforced.
Guess the discussion is to find out if it was a "modesty" suit underneath or not (like a training suit).

March 16, 2009 A shame she never puts together good 100's. The 50LCM back, fly, and breast are all weak records compared to the recent 50free progression.

Hope she drops even more in finals!

March 17, 2009 I just read on the Australian Swimming official website that Alshamar's new record won't be ratified; she was disqualified for wearing two suits. Hard to believe she didn't know the rules!

March 17, 2009 Oh Alshammar's time will not be recognised as she was wearing 2 suits, which isn't allowed at the meet......

March 17, 2009 A rumour according to Sky News Sports, she has been stripped of WR for breaking suit laws...any truth in this?

March 17, 2009 She has been DQed for wearing two suits - no record. Remember, Australia banned multiple suits a few months ago, and FINA's ban should be in effect. See Swimming Australia's website (www.swimming.org.au).

March 17, 2009 Amazing...she was dq'ed for violating the Swimming Australia one suit policy after the referee ruled her second suit wasn't a training suit (allowed in Australian meets for modesty purposes).

March 17, 2009 Does anyone know what exactly she was wearing?
If the ref decided her second suit was deemed 'not a training suit' as dcswimguy is letting us know, then do we have information about what the 2 suits were?
I read about the modesty rule in Aussie swimming and it seems pretty clear. But obviously there was some debate about the suit first.
Be interesting to hear what the real situation was.
