USA Swimming Sectionals, Cambridge: Sara Giberson Triples -- March 15, 2009

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, March 15. THE final night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Cambridge, Mass., featured a title trifecta by AGUA's Sara Giberson.

Peddie's team of Carolyn Fittin, JiYoung Lee, Kathryn Raplee and Xiao Zhao claimed the meet record in the women's 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:34.05. The swim cleared the 1:34.98 set by Peddie in 2005. The Jersey Gator squad of Kevin Wilson, Eric Gaffey, Michael MacDonald and Brandon Moy led a trio of teams under the meet record with a 1:23.20. Peddie (1:23.48) and Bluefish (1:25.04) also beat the 1:24.47 set by Long Island back in 2005.

Alicia Mathieu of SoNoCo cruised in the women's 1000-yard free with a meet-record time of 9:41.09. The swim beat the old record of 9:42.25 set by Cristina Teuscher back in 2001. Badger's Ryan Feeley then broke the 15:00 barrier in the men's 1650-yard free with a 14:57.37 to crush the meet record of 15:16.85 set by Brendan Neligan in 2001. Germantown's Arthur Frayler (15:09.99) and Peddie's Connor Signorin (15:14.48) also beat the old record.

Giberson followed in the women's 200-yard back with a 1:57.10 for the win, while Jeffery Gomez of Cougar clocked a 1:48.98 to claim the men's 200-yard back title.

Peddie's Fittin just missed the meet record with a 49.98 in the women's 100-yard free. Julia Smit's 49.68 from 2006 withstood the challenge. Central Jersey's Connor Jaeger then took home the men's 100-yard free in 45.05.

Giberson returned for another triumph, this time with a meet-record readout of 2:00.18 in the women's 200-yard IM. Central Connecticut's Faith Martin (2:01.10) and Bluefish's Laura Sogar (2:01.16) also eclipsed the former meet record of 2:01.53 set by Elizabeth Beisel in 2007. Peddie's Nimrod Hayet came up short of the meet record with a winning time of 1:48.15 in the men's 200-yard IM. However, Ron Karnaugh's 2001 record of 1:48.13 held up.

AGUA's Giberson, Annie Zhu, Isla Hutchinson-Maddox and Lia Neal held off Peddie's Rachel Flinn, Lee, Fittin and Laura Loughran, 3:46.44 to 3:46.97, for the women's 400-yard medley relay victory. Both teams smashed the meet record of 3:49.98 set by Badger in 2003. Peddie's Signorin, Hayet, Wesley Mullins and Pete Fittin posted a 3:21.75 to beat the meet record in the men's 400-yard medley relay. Bluefish (3:23.17) also touched under the former standard of 3:24.53 set by its club in 2007.
