USA Swimming Sectionals, Cambridge: 1000/1650 Frees Open First Night, 29-Year-Old Pool Record Downed -- March 12, 2009

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, March 12. THE first night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Cambridge, Mass., featured the 1000/1650-yard freestyle events.

SoNoCo's Alicia Mathieu posted a time of 16:10.61 to win the women's 1650-yard free. The performance cleared the meet record of 16:14.21 set by Kim Kelly in 2003. Agua's Annie Zhu wound up second in 16:35.74, while Greenwood Memorial's Eva Fabian placed third in 16:36.72.

Badger's Ryan Feeley stopped the clock in 8:57.35 to win the men's 1000-yard freestyle. The effort wiped out the 29-year-old facility record of 8:58.54 set by UCLA's Brian Goodell way back in 1980, before 17-year-old Feeley was born. The swim also broke the meet record of 9:06.12 set by Brendan Neligan in 2001. Peddie's Connor Signorin took second in 9:05.16, while Germantown's Arthur Frayler placed third in 9:09.37.
