Flash French Foursome Smashes 400 Free Relay World Record Over Short Course Meters -- December 20, 2008

ISTRES, France, December 20. IN a short course meter meet held in Istres, a French foursome obliterated the world record in the men's 400 free relay. The mark is the 107th global standard set in 2008.

Gregory Mallet (47.41), Fabien Gilot (44.92), William Meynard (47.65) and Fred Bousquet (45.00) clocked a startling time of 3:04.98. That performance demolished the previous world record of 3:08.44 set by the U.S. at the 2008 World Short Course Championships.

Ryan Lochte (47.09), Bryan Lundquist (46.64), Nathan Adrian (46.57) and Doug Van Wie (48.14) were the members of the American team that previously owned the standard.

December 20, 2008 Same with the fastest U.S. team, that was their B or C team that owned the previous record

December 21, 2008 calisurfin: My thought on why they didn't win is twofold: They were over confident that they would defeat the Americans, and second, not taking anything away from all 4 USA relay swimmers, Jason Lezak's come from behind anchor. That how. The French were cocky and overconfident in the press in Beijing. And perhaps they underestimated the US swimmers when it comes to that relay in particular.
