European Short Course Championships: Flash Sanja Jovanovic Sets 50 Back World Record, 101 and Counting - Video Included -- December 13, 2008

RIJEKA, Croatia, December 13. NOT long after Amaury Leveaux posted the 100th world-record setting performance of 2008, Croatia's Sanja Jovanovic gave the swimming world its 101st effort with a global standard in the 50 back at the European Short Course Championships.

Jovanovic sprinted to a winning time of 26.23, which eclipsed her global record of 26.37 set at the 2008 World Short Course Championships.

Ukraine's Kate Zubkova ripped off a swift time of 26.65 for second, while Italy's Elena Gemo placed third in 26.77.

December 14, 2008 The number of world records isn't amazing, it's absurd. No one doubts that the athletes who have achieved world records like Leveaux, etc., have worked hard, are at the top of their games and deserve recognition, but it's clear something must be done to stem the enhancement of those swims (enhancement which doesn't enhance equally!). The LZR opened the door to a free-for-all in the suit industry of producing "legal" suits of very questionable materials and other high tech enhancement tools that have been in rapid development. What coach or athlete would say no to any of this technology if they are assured "it's all legal"? What US college team is going to order the "outdated" Speedo FS Pro when the very legal Blue 70 is not only available but is "state of the art" and more affordable? Companies like TYR and others obviously weren't going to lie down and die when Speedo's LZR took the world by storm last year. They've been busy with their own innovative R
