Eindhoven Cup: Randall Bal Just Misses 100 Back World Record

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, December 7. RANDALL Bal nearly added another world record to his 50 back standard from earlier in the Eindhoven Cup when he blasted the 100 back with a time of 52.59. That performance finished just shy of Aaron Peirsol's global standard of 52.54 set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Joeri Verlinden opened the last night of swimming with a 1:58.62 in the men's 200 fly, while American Kim Vandenberg captured the women's 200 fly in 2:08.06.

Hannah Miley touched out Silke van Hoof, 1:03.64 to 1:03.84, in the women's 100 back. Kimberley Buys rounded out the top three in 1:03.88.

Lennart Stekelenburg broke his preliminary national record of 1:00.85 with a winning effort of 1:00.56 in the men's 100 breast, while Elise Matthyssen won the women's 100 breast in 1:09.12. Lia Dekker broke her preliminary national record of 1:09.50 with a second-place time of 1:09.15.

Sebastiaan Verschuren won the men's 200 free in 1:47.89, while Femke Heemskerk took the women's 200 free in 1:58.18.

Pieter van den Hoogenband then had a farewell party, which featured a laser show and Ian Thorpe showing up as a special guest.
