EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, December 5. WHILE plenty of short course action is going on across the world, the Eindhoven Cup is providing some long course meter competition.
Randall Bal took full advantage of the opportunity by smashing the world record in the men's 50 back. Bal clocked a time of 24.33 that wiped out the 24.47 global standard set by Liam Tancock in Sheffield earlier this year. Bal's time also shattered the American record of 24.71 set by Ben Hesen during time trials at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials this summer.
Moniek Nijhuis clipped her national record in the women's 50 breast with a time of 31.70. Her previous standard of 31.78 was set during preliminary action this morning. That time broke her previous record of 31.80 set in Eindhoven in March.
Meanwhile, Ranomi Kromowidjojo posted a time of 28.70 that downed the women's 50 back national record of 28.86 set by Hinkelien Schreuder in Eindhoven in March.
Joeri Verlinden led off the first evening of swimming with a triumph in the men's 100 fly. He clocked a time of 52.21, downing second-place finisher Robin van Aggele (52.73).
Coming off a splendid 2008 long course season, The Netherlands female sprint corps returned to action in the women's 100 fly. Marleen Veldhuis clocked a time of 57.85 for the win, while Inge Dekker (58.46) and Schreuder (59.40) finished second and third. Notably, American Kim Vandenberg is in action at this meet as she took fourth in 1:00.01.
In the men's 400 IM, Dennis Eliveld walked away with the title in 4:59.05, while Andrea Kneppers followed in the women's 400 free with a winning time of 4:27.20.
van Aggele turned his second-place finish in the 100 fly into gold in the men's 50 breast with a time of 28.11, touching out Lennart Stekelenburg's 28.14
Sebastiaan Verschuren topped the men's 400 free with a time of 3:50.23, while Marjolein Delno and Orla Adams tied for the women's 400 IM with matching 5:16.07s.
The 50 frees concluded the night as Robert Liejesen won the men's race in 22.40, while Veldhuis grabbed the women's title in 24.36. Schreuder (24.45), Kromowidjojo (24.92) and Dekker (25.24) finished second through fourth.
