Canada Cup: Julia Smit Remains On Fire -- November 30, 2008

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada, November 30. AFTER writing a world and American record on her resume over the past two days at the Canada Cup, Smit nearly clipped another global standard on the final night.

Smit clocked a lightning fast time of 58.90 in the women's 100 IM at the short course meter event. That time came up just short of Natalie Coughlin's world record of 58.80 set in 2002. Tara Kirk placed second in the race in 1:01.04. Smit later ripped off a 1:55.59 to win the 200 free.

Other notable performances came from Nicolas Murray with a time of 54.55 in the men's 100 IM, clearing the Canadian record of 54.80 set by Darren Ward in 1991.

Kirk followed her second-place finish with a 30.61 to win the 50 breast, while Warren Barnes claimed the 50 breast in 27.86.

Elaine Breeden (women's 200 fly: 2:05.84), Stefan Hirniak (men's 200 fly: 1:57.63), Laura Wadden (women's 100 back: 59.94), Pascal Wollach (men's 100 back: 53.59) and Joel Greenshields (men's 200 free: 1:46.09) also won events.

December 14, 2008 Way to go Barnes! I still remember the days when I used to school you everyday...alas, those days are gone.

Canada Cup was a very fast meet, by Canadian standards, and it was definitely great to have some of our American friends make the journey northward. It certainly made for an exciting competition.
