By Phillip Whitten
TEMPE, Arizona, November 4. SENIORS Eric Hadley and Chris Patience were the only swimmers to turn in double wins at the Arizona 5A Boys High School State Swimming Championships, held in unseasonly cool temperatures at Arizona State university in Tempe. But perennial state champ, Brophy Prep, won the team title in a tight battle with Mountain View and Dobson. Brophy had 278.5 points to Mountain View's 246 and Dobson's 236.
Hadley set the only 5A state record of the meet, clocking 49.97 seconds to win the 100 yard backstroke. The overall state record, however, is 49.16, set by Matt Ulrickson in 1996). Hadley also added a win in the 100 butterfly in 50.64.
Patience, a senior at Mountain View, won both freestyle sprints, taking the 50 in 20.96 and the 100 in 46.33.
Salpointe won both freestyle relays in speedy times: 1:26.04 in the 200 and 3:09.30 in the 400.
Chris Lichenberg, a senior at Red Mountain, swam an outstanding 57.29 to win the 100 breaststroke. John Zemaitis (senior, Horizon) took the 200 free in 1:40.54, while Tyler DeBerry (junior, Sabino) won the 500 in 4:32.69. Brophy swam 1:35.77 to take the 200 medley relay.
