Passages: Pilot Aquatic Club's Larry Shofe, 55 -- August 19, 2008

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, August 19. LARRY Shofe, 55, who just recently left Sarasota YMCA to take over as head coach of Pilot Aquatic Club in Knoxville, Tenn., has died of an apparent suicide according to a report by the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

Shofe, who had described his new position as his dream job, was found in his Corvette in his garage. The car was under a cover and a hose had been attached to the tailpipe and run in the driver's side window, according to Al Greene, who rented the house on Riversedge Road to Shofe.

Greene said he had been contacted earlier in the day by Shofe's wife, Rosemary, who said she could not get in touch with her husband. Greene said he later went to the house, used his key to enter and searched for Shofe.

On his second trip into the garage, he lifted the cover on the car, saw Shofe and called authorities. The car was not running, Greene said.

August 19, 2008 We are so sad to hear of the loss of Coach Larry Shofe. A terrible loss for his swimmers here in Sarasota, the YMCA Sharks, as well as, what would have been, his swimmers at Pilot Knoxville Swim Club. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Rosemary and their children, Kevin and Milo-as well as all the lives that Coach Shofe has touched.
