USA Swimming Sectionals, Bakersfield: Second Night Comes To Close

BAKERSFIELD, California, July 17. THE second night of close swims came to a close at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Bakersfield.

Yumi So, 17, of Swim Pasadena touched out Rachael Wahl of Santa Maria, 2:16.06 to 2:16.11, in the women's 200 fly to open the evening. Hayes Hyde of De Anza Cupertino placed third in 2:17.66.

Tom Shields, 17, of Nova followed with a win in the men's 200 fly with a time of 2:02.21. Josh Joiner, his teammate, finished second in 2:04.60. Jonny Muir of Santa Clara took third in 2:05.81.

Teens ruled in the women's 200 breast. Jordan Danny, 16, won in 2:31.31, while Mikaela Macklin, 15, of AquaSol took second in 2:36.75. Angie Haven, 17, wound up third in 2:36.78.

Sean Mahoney of Terrapins crushed the field in the men's 200 breast with a 2:12.97. Cody Miller, 16, of Clark County finished second in 2:19.15, while Martti Aljand of California touched third in 2:21.65.

Presley Bard of Terrapins gave her club another win with a 2:17.25 in the women's 200 back. Samantha Pearson, 17, of Team Rebel placed second in 2:19.67, while Deborah Roth, 15, of North Bay cleared third in 2:20.25.

The men's 200 back went to Vladimir Morozov, 16, with a 2:07.14. Daniel Smith finished second in 2:08.91, while Shayne Fleming, 16, of De Anza Cupertino picked up third in 2:09.04.

Youngster Chelsea Chenault, 13, of Terrapins surprised with a time of 58.14 to win the women's 100 free. Madeline Schaefer, 14, of De Anza Cupertino touched close behind in 58.22. Alex Sullivan of Conejo Simi clinched third in 58.53.

Gabe Woodward completed the night with a close call, just like the session began. He touched out Dominick Meichtry, 49.42 to 49.47, in the men's 100 free. Phillip Morrison rounded out the top three in 52.01.
