USA Swimming Sectionals, Austin: Kirsty Coventry Claims Zimbabwe Record in 100 Free

AUSTIN, Texas, July 16. KIRSTY Coventry had some fun in the B final of the women's 100 free as she claimed the Zimbabwe national record at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Austin.

Coventry clocked a time of 55.73 to break her previous record of 56.80 set back in 2005. Coventry, however, coasted in prelims and only notched a time of 59.62 for 12th overall. Genny Konicke of Plano earned the title in 57.61, just beating Sherrill Thompson of Texas Gold's 57.65. Skylar Smith, 15, of Aquastar finished third in 58.43.

Longhorn's Jonathan Jackson won the men's 100 free in 50.63, while Tiger's Miko Malberg (51.07) and Longhorn's Ben VanRoekel (51.36) placed second and third, respectively.

Micah Lawrence of Texas Gold surfaced with the women's 100 breast crown in 1:11.03, while Mustang Spindrift Beck wrapped up second in 1:13.91. Longhorn Alison Soelter took third in 1:14.28.

Jerr Merritt of Mustangs touched out Josh Hammervold of First Colony, 1:06.17 to 1:06.53, for the men's 100 breast win, while Cheyne Hermes of Katy rounded out the top three in 1:07.18.

Coventry claimed her first title of the meet with a strong time of 2:12.42 in the women's 200 back. Longhorn teammate Rebecca Orr wound up second in 2:14.84, while Rice's Kait Chura finished third in 2:21.00.

Fleet went 1-2 in the men's 100 back. Cole Cragin won in 2:04.15, while Hunter Bayley placed second in 2:06.70. Scott Drews comprised the rest of the podium in 2:08.53.

The distance freestyles closed the night. Longhorns Susana Escobar (8:40.29) and Natalie Sacco (8:48.89) paced the women's 800 free with Fleet's Cammile Adams taking third in 8:53.15.

Mustang Caleb Veazey captured the men's 800 free in 8:25.37 with Fleet's Andrew Keily (8:26.70) and Texas Gold's Nolan Slesnick (8:29.83) taking second and third.
