World Youth Championships: Assorted Countries Hear Anthems on Third Night -- July 10, 2008

MONTERREY, Mexico, July 10. NO single country dominated the third night of swimming at the World Youth Championships. However, plenty of budding young stars stepped strong into the limelight throughout the evening in Monterrey.

South Africa's Heerden Herman earned the first title of the night with a time of 8:01.77 in the men's 800 free. Poland's Krzysztof Pielowski wound up second in 8:02.02, while France's Raoul Shaw took third in 8:04.71.

Poland went 1-3 in the women's 200 back as Zuzanna Mazurek took the overall title in 2:12.56. Her compatriot Karolina Urbanska claimed second in 2:13.83, while Elizabeth Pelton of the U.S. split the difference with a second-place 2:13.53.

New Zealand's Daniel Bell added the 100 fly to the 100 back crown he won last night when he touched in 52.52, just edging Serbia's Ivan Lendjer, who finished second in 52.62. Timothy Phillips of the U.S. snagged third in 52.87.

Another 1-3 effort came in the women's 100 free, but this time it belonged to the Americans. Samantha Tucker snared the title in a time of 55.59, while teammate Megan Romano touched third in 56.32. Germany's Silke Lippok checked in second with a 56.08.

In semifinal action, Italy's Silvia Di Pietro led the women's 50 fly in 26.83, while compatriot Luca Leonardi touched first in the men's 50 free with a 22.66. The Russian duo of Ekaterina Baklakova (1:09.27) and Olga Detenyuk (1:09.40) paced the women's 100 breast, while, Belarus' Pavel Sankovich won the men's 50 back semis with a 25.89.
