MANCHESTER, England, April 13. CROATIA's Sanja Jovanovic smashed her own world record in the women's 50 back at the FINA World Short Course Championships on the final day.

Jovanovic clocked a time of 26.37 to dip under her former record of 26.50 set in December.

"I made mistakes: one at the start because I was too nervous," Jovanovic told meet organizers. "The second one was on the turn in the first 25m, I missed the turn and lost the lead. It was hard but I did it and I'm extremely happy with it. My coach has been annoyed with me in the last seven days but it's paid off in the end. Now nobody can say that my world record (in Debrecen, 2007) was a fluke."

Jovanovic kept the title in the hands of a European, as Germany's Janine Pietsch won in 2006. Since the race first began being offered in 1999, Germany has won the title three times with Sandra Voelker (1999) and Antje Buschschulte (2000) winning the other two titles. In 2002 and 2004, the U.S. owned the crown as Jennifer Carroll and Haley Cope both claimed wins.

China's Gao Chang placed second in 26.70, while Ukraine's Kate Zubkova picked up bronze in 26.81.

Zubkova's swim crushed her previous national record of 27.24 set yesterday.
