Swimming World Magazine Cactus Classic Closes Down First Day of Swimming

TEMPE/SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 26. THE Swimming World Magazine Cactus Classic concluded the first night of competition at the dual-site meet held at both Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., and the Cactus Aquatic Center in Scottsdale, Ariz. The 400 and 800 freestyle events were featured throughout the night.

Women's 800 freestyle
15-year-old Ashley Evans of Brophy East provided the only sub nine-minute time of the day in the women's distance event when she won the title in 8:56.84. Meanwhile, Jenni Stratton of the David Douglas Swim Club grabbed silver in 9:10.72 and Whitney Lopus, 16, of Sun Devil Aquatics snared bronze in 9:12.39.

Men's 800 freestyle
Zachary Anderson hit the wall first in 8:36.11 for the title, while Gunnar Schmidt of Scottsdale Aquatic Club took second in 8:37.55. Michael Zoldos, also of Scottsdale Aquatic Club, rounded out the podium in 8:38.07.

Relay Winners
Sun Devil Aquatics' team of Whitney Lopus (2:06.30), Nicole McAndrew (2:10.20), Haley Krakoski (2:09.68) and Christine Olson (2:11.11) won the women's 800 freestyle relay in 8:37.29, while their teammates Sean Boyle (1:56.66), Nick Brunelli (1:58.43), Steve Neuwert (2:03.48) and Marin Naranca (2:02.17) took home the men's title in 8:00.74.
