Promising Seniors-To-Be 2007: Kevin Munsch -- May 20, 2007
PHOENIX, Arizona, May 20. KEVIN Munsch, who swims for Marc Stock of Kennedy High in Burien, Wash., and Sean Hutchison of King Aquatics in Milton, Wash., is next up in SwimmingWorldMagazine.com's Promising Seniors-To-Be spotlight series.
As of the May 14 National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) release of All-American candidates, Munsch has proven that he is one of the top flight breaststroke specialists with a time of 56.16 in the 100 breast. That is the second-fastest time in the country based on the list and makes him the quickest junior in the event. He also clocked a 1:51.33 to make the All-American applicant list in the 200 IM.
Munsch took time out of his training schedule to answer a quick Q&A for SwimmingWorldMagazine.com:
Was there a watershed mark in your career that made it clear you had a gift for the sport and could achieve big things?
Yes. Last summer at Junior Nationals, I qualified for Olympic Trials and the National Junior Team. This was, by far, the biggest success I had ever accomplished and was the most motivating experience I could have asked for. It showed me I have some untapped potential and really opened my eyes to what the upper levels of the swimming world are like.
What type of interaction do you have with your coach when it comes to training? What kind of input do you have?
I have an awesome relationship with Coach Sean. I love his training style and the way he runs things on our team, so there is really nothing we disagree on. I just work hard and learn what he has to teach me and so far it's produced some great success for me.
What are your goals for your senior season?
My goals for my senior season are very high. I am the most motivated I have ever been, and am enjoying swimming more than ever. I think my senior season could be pretty exciting. I mainly am looking to better my breaststroke and IMs as much as I can and put up some fast times, along with continuing to get ready for Olympic Trials next summer.
Who has made the biggest impact on your swimming career to this point?
It's really hard to point out just one person, I would have to say overall my family and coaches have been the most influential. My family has always been there for me and helped me out. I have had awesome coaching through age group and regional swimming (Keith Ure) and now with Coach Sean at the national level. There is no way I could have attained the success I have today without their great guidance and coaching.
Have you verbally committed to any University? If so, which one and why? If not, who is in your top five and why?
No I haven't committed to anywhere but I'm interested in Arizona, Southern California, Stanford, Michigan and Texas, along with a couple of others. All of these schools have great things going on that would definitely be great to be a part of.
What has the recruiting process been like for you?
I am not too deep into the recruiting process yet but getting mail and e-mailing various colleges has definitely been cool. I hear things begin to heat up after July 1 when coaches can contact you, so that should also be interesting.
