Coach Bob Bowman Picks His Kentucky Derby Favorites; Shares Similarities Between Training Horses and Swimmers -- May 3, 2007

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 3. WITH the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby only days away, Swimming World Radio talked with Bob Bowman - who dabbles in horse racing as an owner when he is not coaching Michael Phelps and the University of Michigan Men's Swim Team - to talk about racing and training similarities common to both sports.

Listen as Coach Bowman gives a brief overview of the Kentucky Derby and its place in the Triple Crown, which is a series of races where the winner of all three must display speed, middle-endurance and endurance. Phelps displays all these same traits as he swims races that cover the 100, 200 and 400-meter distances.

Learn what Coach Bowman has to say about bloodlines and how season training plans for horses are similar to training swimmers.

Most importantly, see how he sees the Kentucky Derby race will unfold and who he feels are the horses to watch this Saturday.
