Thiago Pereira Sets South American, Brazilian Record in First Final Session of Maria Lenk Championships -- May 2, 2007

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 2. THIAGO Pereira set the South American and Brazilian record in the 200-meter breaststroke during the first finals session at the Maria Lenk Championships held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from May 1-6.

Pereira stopped the clock in 2:12.67, which chopped nearly two seconds off his previous standard of 2:14.64 set Sept. 6, 2006.

In other action, Therese Alshammar won the women's 50 free in 25.01, while Nicholas dos Santos claimed the men's splash-and-dash in 22.60.

Fresh off setting the Brazilian record in the women's 200 breast at 2:33.17 during prelims, Tatiane Sakemi won the event just a bit slower in 2:33.73.

Poliana Okimoto and Cecliia Biagioli claimed the women's 800 freestyle in championship-record times of 8:46.87s, while Luiz Rogerio topped the men's 1500 free in a championship-record time of 15:29.01.
