New Canaan Men Win Connecticut State Championship

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, April 6. NEW Canaan emerged from a tight field as the men's champion at the Connecticut High School State Championship.

New Canaan (325.5) beat out Fairfield Prep (299) for first place overall. Greenwich, a double-relay winner, placed third with 274 points.

The Greenwich foursome of Andrew Cosentino, Scott Wellington, Ross Schofield and James Case overtook Pomperaug on the last leg of the 200 freestyle relay to win the event in a 1:26.27 time. Cosentino, Wellington, Mark Minowitz and Case teamed up in the 400 freestyle relay, winning the event in 3:09.98.

Notre Dame-West Haven senior Richard Ulatowski captured both sprint events, winning the 50 freestyle in 20.89 and the 100 freestyle in 45.63. Ulatowski will continue his swimming career at Virginia Tech next year, according to Virginia Tech's sports information department.

Pomperaug junior Travis McNamara added his name to the list of double event winners with victories in both the 200 IM (1:54.54) and the 500 freestyle (4:37.44).

David MacDonald of Darien took the diving title with a 459.90 score. Mark Gracia of Xavier placed second with 453.85 points while Bradley Schott from Wilton took third place with 391.35 points.
